According to many local building codes, booster fans are required to be part of the dryer duct when it exceeds 25 feet. That is with no bends, if one bend is needed it drops to 20 feet and from there 15 feets when 2 bends are needed.
Usually you will already know there is a problem in your system because the drying time is just taking too long. On new duct installs it will drop over time, what used to take 45 minutes starts becoming 2 to 3 hours.
In a lot of situations dust begins to appear in the dryer area and even sometimes condensation leaks at different places in the duct run.
What's ideal about today fans is the material they are made of. Most are PC/ABS blends because it combines the ability for the plastic to be UV resistance and stand up to weather conditions and at the same time providing flame resistance. Used a lot these days in computer products and plastic housings for motor components.
What to look for in a Booster Fan:
The main component to look for is the positive pressure switch. This detects positive pressure in the duct which turns the fan on and off.
Another item to look for is closed ball bearings in the motor since it will be exposed to lint over it's life cycle. Also a lot of people install lent traps at the same time to cut down on lent.
One more Thing:
Even with closed bearings and lint traps and new ducting, it's still a good idea to have your dryer booster fan easy to get to. To make sure that there is no lint clogging up internal components. Even know the bearings are sealed in better motors any lint at all can impede optimum performance. Check every 6 months for peace of mind.
